Ines Mahjoubi, the challenge of light and water
The Tunisian architect Ines Mahjoubi exhibits this October some of her watercolor’s works at the Café Unicornio in Cadiz.
Mahjoubi prefers this technique to any another one «because it involves water and I love water,» she says in a conversation while installing her paintings on the walls of the Unicornio.
This cafeteria, one of the pioneers, if not the first in Cádiz to host art exhibitions, is a frequent stopover point not only for established local artists, but also for others who want to start making their work known.
Ines installs her works with the help of her teacher, the painter from Jerez Rafael Casado, who carefully measures that all the works are placed in the most suitable place and in the most correct way possible.

The watercolors that Mahjoubi exhibits were made in the last three years, part of them during the Covid-19 pandemic. For her, picking up the brushes means taking a break from daily worries and losing herself in creation.
The challenge of light and water
In most of them the color blue predominates, with the exception of two large paintings in peach tones. What most appeals to her right now is trying to capture how the light changes as it reflects on the water. «It’s a constant challenge,» she says with a smile.
Accustomed to traveling to various countries around the world for professional and family reasons, she is convinced that knowledge of other stories also nourishes her works “I amnot a stone”, she says. Or in other words, “It leaves a mark on you and you can use it”. And also: “it is more baggage for the rest of the way”.
She is not too concerned, she says, whether people would like the final result or not, but she underlines the authenticity and the honesty of the work she does and which she exhibits now: “I have put something of myself in those paintings for sure”.
