El mercado editorial de EEUU lo forman un noventa y siete por ciento de obras escritas en ingl\u00e9s y un tres por ciento de obras traducidas de otros idiomas del mundo, entre ellos el espa\u00f1ol. El dato no es nuevo aunque se haya incluido en el Anuario El Espa\u00f1ol en el Mundo presentado esta semana por el Instituto Cervantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hay algunos datos interesantes en el anuario de este a\u00f1o que siguen la tendencia ya observada del crecimiento del idioma espa\u00f1ol en aquel pa\u00eds y de los que quiero destacar dos: su poblaci\u00f3n legal la forman 63\u20197 millones de hispanos para un total de 341 millones de habitantes, seg\u00fan datos del censo electoral de 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un buen mercado educativo<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

El segundo es que Estados Unidos es el primer pa\u00eds del mundo en n\u00famero de estudiantes de espa\u00f1ol, 8\u20196 millones, de los que algo m\u00e1s de 8 millones est\u00e1n en primaria, secundaria y formaci\u00f3n profesional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\u00ed que es posible que se vendan m\u00e1s libros directamente escritos en espa\u00f1ol que libros traducidos del espa\u00f1ol al ingl\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Una pista de esta realidad se vi\u00f3 en la Feria Liber de 2022 celebrada en L\u2019Hospitalet, d\u00f3nde el Gremio de Editores de Libros de Espa\u00f1a inform\u00f3 (lo public\u00f3 La Vanguardia<\/em><\/a>, <\/em>por ejemplo) que Estados Unidos se hab\u00eda convertido en el segundo pa\u00eds americano en importar libros en espa\u00f1ol, solo superado por M\u00e9xico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bostezar ante las novelas extranjeras<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

El agente literario Guillermo Shavelzon recordaba en su blog en 2016<\/a> un reportaje del New York Times <\/em>sobre el particular con el significativo t\u00edtulo Am\u00e9rica bosteza ante las novelas extranjeras.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

El mercado editorial del pa\u00eds, el mayor del mundo (m\u00e1s de tres millones de solicitudes de ISBN en 2022 por 95.811 de Espa\u00f1a), no considera rentable publicar traducciones de autores de otros pa\u00edses del mundo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El profesor de la Universidad Washington en San Luis, Ignacio Infante Fern\u00e1ndez, que ha elaborado este cap\u00edtulo del Anuario El Espa\u00f1ol en el Mundo, subraya que \u201cdentro del mundo editorial de Estados Unidos, esta cifra del 3 % se ha convertido en un n\u00famero paradigm\u00e1tico\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Una cifra \u201cque denota la baja cantidad de traducciones que caracterizan al mercado editorial estadounidense y el monoling\u00fcismo preponderante dentro del mismo mercado, que conlleva una marginalizaci\u00f3n considerable de la producci\u00f3n literaria y cultural no anglosajona\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los datos que maneja Infante, elaborados por la revista Publishers Weekly,<\/em> <\/em>son bastante expl\u00edcitos: en 2022 el mercado editorial estadounidense public\u00f3, traducidas al ingl\u00e9s, 79 obras escritas en espa\u00f1ol, lo que incluye no solo a autores espa\u00f1oles, sino tambi\u00e9n a hispanoamericanos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Y a\u00fan as\u00ed, esta cifra exigua, 79 t\u00edtulos, supuso un aumento del 46% con respecto al 2010, cuando se publicaron 54.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En palabra del profesor Infante, este dato \u201csugiere un mayor inter\u00e9s por las literaturas escritas en espa\u00f1ol y una mayor demanda por parte del p\u00fablico y los medios culturales estadounidenses\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fomento de las traducciones<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Al otro lado del espejo, o sea, en este lado de la orilla atl\u00e1ntica, el mercado editorial espa\u00f1ol public\u00f3 ese a\u00f1o 6.530 obras traducidas del ingl\u00e9s (que tambi\u00e9n se habla, no de olvide en todos los pa\u00edses que fueron parte de la Commonwealth).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\u00ed como la Uni\u00f3n Europea tiene programas propios para el fomento de las traducciones de lenguas minoritarias de la Uni\u00f3n, por ejemplo el rumano, el sueco, por citar solo dos casos, tambi\u00e9n en Estados Unidos, desde el \u00e1mbito universitario hay una iniciativa parecida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El profesor Infante cita por ejemplo el programa Three Percent <\/em>(Tres por ciento) <\/em>de la Universidad de Rochester, para promover la literatura internacional y las traducciones. Y reclama en sus conclusiones un refuerzo de los medios para que este t\u00edmido aumento prosiga los a\u00f1os venideros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
